Two flatland tyrolean bouldering sportclimbing freaks wanted to go high up. Finally they reached the top of Grand Capucin but found it always goes higher and higher and higher... Nice pictures of the Grand Capucin ascent and two little videos of the bergschrund and a 'little' storm in the tent. Simon did well. It was his first multipitch alpine climb at all.
The Grand Capucin is an extraordinary red granit tower in the Mont Blanc Group . It has an E face rising steeply out of the Géant Glacier. It is situated at the end of the east side of the Mont Blanc du Tacul . You can't miss it when you go from the Aiguille du Midi to the Rifugio Torino. It is a wonderful rock obelisk on the glacier du Géant. Particularly noticeable are the rows of overhangs which at one time suggested it was unclimbable, but Bonatti found a winding route which goes over some of the overhangs, but in general works its way up between the great roofs; the climbing is quite literally, geometrically vertical, something quite exceptional on granite. Although its faces are not higher than 490 m and although the mountain can be seen only from the summits around, it has been inte...

The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is a railway tunnel in the heart of the Swiss Alps expected to open in 2016. With a route length of 57 km (35.4 mi) and a total of 151.84 km (94.3 mi) of tunnels, shafts and passages, it is the world's longest rail tunnel, surpassing the Seikan Tunnel in Japan. Its main purpose is to increase total transport capacity across the Alps, especially for freight, notably between Germany and Italy, and more particularly to shift freight volumes from road to rail to reduce environmental damage caused by ever-increasing numbers of heavy lorries. A secondary benefit will be to cut the journey time for passenger trains from Zürich to Milan by about an hour and from Zürich to Lugano to 1-hour 40 minutes. The project consists of two single-track tunnels. It is part of t...
Hiking 100 miles in 11 days through the Swiss Alps on the Haute Route. The Haute Route, is the name given to a route undertaken on foot or by ski touring between Chamonix in France and Zermatt in Switzerland. Our diverse group of 12 trekkers included 76 year old Jimmy Shetterly and he out-hiked us all! The Alps had the most snow in 37 years, so even though it was mid-summer, we encountered much of it on the trail. Parts of the trail were very icy, but we only had two falls during the hike, and unfortunately I participated in one of those. I was filming the group trekking by through the snow and when I stood up I lost my balance and slide down the mountain-face almost 100 feet just missing a huge boulder! Luckily I was unharmed and scampered back up to the trail to join the others. We f...
